What to do when your child has a language processing disorder?

How to help your child cope up with Language processing disorder?

The very first thing to do when your child was diagnosed with LPD is that to make an appointment with an Occupational Therapist ASAP.

How do occupational therapists help LPD children?

Remember that LPD children find it difficult to learn the conceptual meanings of words. With OT intervention, your child will be taught to associate sound and words with their meanings. Like mama will be the mother and eat is the intake of food.

Also, with OT intervention, the child will be taught to express himself verbally, without the tantrums, the grunting and merely pointing, and the hurting of both himself and others.

OT intervention will also help your child learn to follow instructions, lessen his daydreaming and improve his attention span and focus.

Hyperactivity will be somewhat lessened as the child’s interest to books and studying will be stirred.

For children with delayed motor activities, like for example standing up or walking or running, OT will help them develop these motor activities. OT will also help teach your child become independent and more organized in his actions.

Parents should not delay seeing an OT because in LPD, time is crucial. OT will help your child improve his behavior, his motor skills and even his cognitive skills.

When your child is diagnosed with LPD, parent and home support is very important. Ask your OT for program of activities to be done at home. Therapy intervention is usually an hour only. Your child spends more time at home with you than in the therapy center with the OT. So the rate of his improvement depends more on you, the parent.

Be patient with your child. Your faith as well counts. Believe your child will overcome this disorder and your child will catch it. This will help him a lot because therapy will be frustrating for your children at first. Imagine he will be taught with things that are very difficult for him to learn, so your enthusiasm and your faith will help him start feeling comfortable and eventually liking therapy. Also, if your child catches your faith and enthusiasm, it will help him develop the patience and enthusiasm to learn.
